They also engaged in self-paced running and stopped when their total calorie burns matched the sloped burns walking on the treadmill. During the 7-day survey, all participants performed a 12-3-30 workout and a single self-paced run.

A slope walking vs. running study showed that participants running at their own pace burned 33% of their calories from fat. Meanwhile, sloping walking burned 40% from the fat. Therefore, the body’s fuel preference was fat on sloping walks. This means that you can reduce fat when walking on a slope rather than running.
