The App Store doesn’t run out of music-centric apps, but one of my favorites that has stood out for a long time is Musicharbor. Currently, as part of the Big Version 5.0 update, the app supports News Integration, a feature Apple Music should add years ago. Here’s why I think Apple News Integration is a perfect addition to music apps, as well as TV, books, etc.

Musicharbor shows how news fits seamlessly into Apple Music and more

Written by John Voorhees MacStories:

My favorite new section of Musicharbor is the news. This pulls articles about artists you follow from 12 sources. A great set of publications including Chorus.fm, NPR Music, Pitchfork and more. However, if there are feeds among those who list things you don’t like, then you can turn off individual publications, so they won’t appear in the app.

Apple Music should fully follow the Musicharbor example.

Reading the news about your favorite artists makes a lot of sense within the music app, especially if Apple is going elegantly.

For example, I don’t want news about artists trying to clog my music app.

But a related story? absolutely.

From Musicharbor’s release note: “Only updates from artists you follow will be visible.”

Apple can easily add sections to all artist pages on Apple Music where Apple News stories reside. The most relevant stories for your favorite artists can also be integrated into the Home tab.

The company already offers such Apple News integrations in two apps (work and weather), so bringing something similar to music isn’t a big resource lift.

And why does it stop there? I would like to see related Apple News articles appearing not only on music, but also on Apple TV apps.

Integrating Apple News increases user retention and attention

One of the biggest struggles facing streaming services is the constant battle to attract user attention.

Apps like Netflix and Disney+ want to be sticky. In other words, I’ve come back over and over again.

If all the shows and movies on the Apple TV app highlight quality Apple News articles about its content, that’s a big reason why users continue to open the app more frequently.

The same principle applies not only to TV and music, but also to Apple Books and Apple Podcasts.

Apple has a powerful tool in Apple News. I don’t think this is that difficult to integrate with media apps. Why didn’t you do that?
