Ever Trend Zone Mark Garman reports for Bloomberg on a potentially life-saving Apple Watch Ultra 3 feature next year. Garman’s report also includes updates on ongoing health and safety features for future Apple Watches currently in development.
According to a reliable report from Gurman, Apple will soon introduce the ability to send text messages via satellite in the next Apple Watch Ultra revision. This is the first time Apple has added satellite connectivity to the Apple Watch. Considering it has twice the battery life of the more sophisticated series models, it makes sense to go with the Ultra form factor first.
As with the latest iPhones, satellite connectivity includes the ability to send text messages when disconnected from Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity, provided the user has a clear view of the sky. This feature is especially appealing to Apple Watch users who are on the go without their iPhone. It’s also helpful if your iPhone is lost or damaged in an accident without Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity.
Additionally, Gurman was the first to report that the Apple Watch will be switching from Intel to MediaTek cellular modems. The switch likely means the Apple Watch will upgrade from LTE to “lower tier 5G service” for connected devices. Apple’s plan to install a modem developed by Apple into the Apple Watch has not received much attention, even though it targets the iPhone.
Meanwhile, Apple continues to develop a blood pressure feature that can detect signs of high blood pressure without providing a specific reading. Apple is also working on non-invasive blood sugar tracking, but Garman said that feature is further down the road.
