Apple has released the first teaser of War Chief, a historic drama starring Jason Momoa (Aquaman, Dune: Part One). This nine-episode series follows the story of Ka’iana, a native Hawaiian warrior fighting to unify the island before the arrival of western colonists in the late 1700s.

Speaking from an Indigenous perspective, the war chief marks the personal projects of Hawaiian indigenous creators Jason Momoa and Thomas Paaa Sivet. The cast features primarily Polynesian ensembles, including Luciane Buchanan, Temuera Morrison, Cliff Curtis, Te Kohe Tuhaka and newcomer Kaina Makua.

Behind the camera, the series is produced by Fifth Season, the same production company behind the hit shows Severance and Chernin Entertainment.

Doug Jung is a showrunner and executive producer. Momoa will lead the finale, with executives producing alongside Shivbett, Peter Chernin, Geno Topping and Brian Andrew Mendoza. Justin Chung (Pachinko, Blue Bayou) will direct the first two episodes.

The music is made up of no one except Hans Zimmer (Gladiator, Interstellar) and James Everingham. There are scores generated by Zimmer’s Bleeding Fingers Music Collective.

The Chief of War marks Momoa’s second major Apple TV+ series. This is one of the platform’s first series and follows See’s global success, closing out its three seasons of execution in 2022.

Apple TV+ is available for $9.99 a month, with TV shows and movies such as Ted Lasso, Severance, Studios, Morning Shows, Shrinks and Silos being hits.
