Apple Watch plans to upgrade from LTE to 5G with rumored modem switch
Apple Watch has had optional cellular connectivity since Apple Watch Series 3 in 2017. However, connectivity remained 4G LTE as the smartphone market moved to 5G. That may finally change with upcoming Apple Watch models.
According to the reliable Mark Gurman, Apple plans to switch modem suppliers and bring the Apple Watch to 5G for the first time. The details are part of an exclusive Bloomberg report detailing upcoming satellite features likely coming to the Apple Watch Ultra 3.
“The transition to MediaTek also includes support for 5G Redcap, a lower-tier 5G service targeted at internet-connected devices and wearables that typically do not require high-speed data connections,” Garman reported. “The current Apple Watch uses 4G LTE, and even though Apple switched the iPhone in 2020, it never moved to the 5G standard.”
As mentioned in the quote, Gurman first reported that Apple plans to replace Intel modems in Apple Watch cellular models with MediaTek’s 5G modems. This means that the Apple Watch is technically intel insideeven though Apple has completely moved on from being a Mac computer chip company.
