Apple’s defense of regular status supported by new research

Apple is one of the most vocal supporters of the benefits of standing up regularly during business days.

The company encourages you to stand once an hour via Apple Watch Alerts, and has also made the Sit-Stand Desks on the Apple Park campus as standard equipment. CEO Tim Cook cited the phrase “Siting Is The New Cancer.”

The phrase has been widely criticized for dramatically exaggerating the risks of sitting and the benefits of standing.

In particular, research suggests that the biggest problem is not whether we are sitting or standing, but rather spending time at rest.

Researchers tracked health data from just over 83,000 people in the UK over an average of about seven years. During the study, participants wore wrist-based accelerometer devices for at least 4 days. The device was calibrated to determine whether you were sitting, standing, walking or running during awakening time. Using that data, researchers linked their time to sitting, standing, and stillness (sitting, standing) to health outcomes in their medical records.

This study found that long-term static surgical treatment significantly increased the risk of orthostatic circulatory disease, whether sitting or standing. However, it was found to be less risky when standing up and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease while sitting.

The researchers found that when participants’ total resting time (sitting and standing) was 12 hours or more per day, the risk of orthostatic circulatory disease increased by 22% per hour, and the risk of cardiovascular disease increased by 13% per hour.

Just sitting, the risk increased every hour after 10 hours. In the case of rectifying circulatory disease, the risk increased by 26% after 10 hours, and the risk of cardiovascular disease increased by 15%. Standing, the risk of obstructive circulatory disease increased only after 2 hours, and increased by 11% every 30 minutes after 2 hours. However, standing there was no effect on cardiovascular disease at any point.
