Blender Benchmark highlights how powerful the graphics on the M4 Max are

Last week, Apple released a new MacBook Pro with the M4, M4 Pro and M4 Max chipset. Also, the early CPU benchmarks (via Geekbench) drew a very promising picture of Apple’s best End M4 Max Chipset. Now we’re looking at some GPU benchmarks and the M4 Max continues to be very strong.

These GPU benchmark scores are from Blender Open Data, a test that allows users to benchmark the blender performance of their devices on both CPU and GPU. Unlike synthetic benchmarks like Geekbench, blender benchmarks can provide real performance ideas if they fit your workflow.

M4 Max vs equivalent Nvidia products

According to Blender Open Data, the M4 Max averaged a score of 5208 on 28 tests, placing it just below the laptop version of NVIDIA’s RTX 4080, just above the last Generation Desktop RTX 3080 TI and the current generation desktop RTX 4070.

Unlike the discrete RTX 3080 TI and RTX 4070, which take up important space within a desktop PC, this is very impressive considering that Apple’s graphics are completely on-chip.

M4 Max vs Best Nvidia Offerings

That being said, it’s not all sun and rainbow. Comparing it to the best ending comparable NVIDIA product, the RTX 4090 laptop, it’s still quite behind. The Laptop 4090 averages 6863, making it about 30% faster than the best END M4 Max.

Obviously there are efficient arguments. Apple’s M4 Max uses far less power than anything in high-end Windows laptop space. However, for those looking to maximize performance on the go, the M4 Max is not the best option, but it works impressively with efficiency in mind.

One interesting highlight is that the Desktop RTX 4090 averages a score of 10,880. Hypothetically, the M4 Ultra Chip doubled on the M4 Max can beat that score, making the next generation of Mac Studio even more interesting.
