Chromecast devices that face a global interruption

Google Chromecast Transmission Dongles have been, for some time, a popular and cheap option for people looking to add intelligent casting skills to their televisions and AV systems.

However, users of older models, specifically the Chromecast (2nd gen) and Chromecast Audio, are currently facing a global interruption.

Reports arose that these devices cannot launch audio or video, or can be accessed through the Google Home application.

The problem seems to be an interruption on the server side, since affected users have noticed that their devices are still on and connected to Wi-Fi.

While Google has not officially commented on the situation, some users have reported having seen an error message that indicates that “the non -reliable device: (the name) cannot be verified. This could be caused by a firmware of obsolete devices.” This suggests that the problem may be related to a security certificate problem.

A Redditor has affirmed that the Intermediate Certificate Authority for Chromecasts (2nd Gen) expired on March 9, March 9, which could be causing the problem. They have suggested a solution that implies restoring the chromecast and manually configuring the date of their phone before that date.

However, this is obviously a task and it would be easier if Google fixed it … but there is still no word on that front.

The newest Chromecast models, including chromecast with Google TV, Chromecast Ultra and Google TV Streamer, do not seem to be affected by this interruption.
