Imports of iPhones and other smartphones from China have reached their lowest levels since 2011
Customs data reveals that since 2011, imports of iPhones and other smartphones from China to the US have reached the lowest level.
The more extreme tariffs are “suspended”, but the 20% tariffs imposed in March are in effect, which is believed to be behind a $1.8 billion drop in the value of smartphones being moved from China to the US…
20% tariff on iPhone
Trump, at his most extreme, announced a 145% tariff on goods imported from China. He was later spoken and “suspended” these but retained a 20% tariff.
Apple told investors that the tariffs mean an additional cost of around $900 million this quarter.
The company has absorbed these costs so far, but it has been reported that Apple is considering increasing the price of the iPhone 17 against its original plan to protect its margins.
Smartphone imports $1.8 billion slump
Bloomberg It reports official Chinese customs data revealing that smartphones’ exports to the US fell to a massive $1.8 billion in April (compared to March). This reduced them to levels seen in 2011, close to those seen in the era of the first iPhone.
Smartphone exports have slid 72% to just under $700 million last month, significantly outpacing the overall 21% decline in Chinese freight to China, detailed customs data showed Tuesday. It highlighted how the Trump administration’s tariff campaign disrupts the tech supply chain and diverts electronics elsewhere.
Other electronics categories affected by tariffs have seen considerable extreme drops.
- Laptop: – $260M
- SSDS: – $156.9M
- Game Console: -$135.9 million
Wireless headphones, monitors and toys were also down significantly.
Apple switches US production to India
CEO Tim Cook told investors that the company is aiming to source as much US production as possible from India, but China hasn’t made this easier.
Similarly, Apple is sending four times more iPhone parts to India for a rally there, so we can see evidence of this shift.
According to general management of Chinese customs, the value of telephone components has been roughly quadrupled over the past year, exporting to India, home to Apple’s largest iPhone production base outside of China.
