LG opens ThinQ to enhance the smart home
LG has opened the doors to its smart home platform, LG ThinQ, with the launch of its Application Programming Interface (API).
The API will make it easier for developers and brands to build smarter, more connected homes with LG appliances… and will also make it easier for users to make their connected kit sing and dance in harmony.
The new LG Smart Solution API Developer website is now available and provides access to two custom APIs: one for individual users and one for enterprises.
For smart home lovers, the ThinQ API allows platforms like Home Assistant to seamlessly connect and control up to 26 LG devices, including refrigerators and washing machines.
With the million global Home Assistant super-enthusiasts (i.e. nerds*) constantly innovating, this integration means LG devices can now integrate directly into advanced smart home setups for a much more personalized experience; a million miles away from the clunky, clunky, walled-off approach ThinQ has taken in the past.
On the business side, the ThinQ Business API supports larger-scale applications, such as office buildings or residential complexes. Building managers will be able to integrate LG appliances, such as washers, dryers and HVAC systems, into their own platforms.
This open platform, combined with LG’s recent acquisition of Athom, the company behind the Homey smart home hub, shows that the Korean tech giant is trying to position itself alongside rival Samsung as a smart home specialist, by still supporting more third-party devices and platforms.
Homey already connects more than 50,000 home appliances from brands such as Philips Hue, Govee and Aqara, with around 1,000 compatible applications in its ecosystem.
LG plans to implement that open connectivity on its ThinQ platform, to create an AI-powered smart home that should take automation to the next level.
It’s clear that LG is now not just focused on making smart home appliances, but also ensuring they can work well with the rest of your smart home setup, no matter which ecosystem you prefer.
