Plastic Apple Watch SE makes no sense – and Apple may have given up on this idea

a Bloomberg Last year’s report revealed that Apple was experimenting with the idea of building a plastic Apple Watch SE to reduce costs. However, the company appears to be giving up on changing the material on its entry-level Apple Watch. To be honest, it should always be metal.

Controversial Plastic Apple Watch SE

In the original July 2024 report, Apple wanted to change the aluminum shell on its Apple Watch SE in favor of “hard plastic.” With this change, the company wanted to reduce production costs for its Apple Watch. This will help Apple to increase profits or lower consumer final prices.

Naturally, this idea was considered by many people as highly controversial. Some believed that plastic apple watches looked “too cheap” even by the standard for “SE” products. Meanwhile, some people argue that plastic is a great material for parents who want to give their children apple watches.

The current aluminum Apple Watch SE costs $249 for Apple. You can find it on Amazon for $169. It’s already a great deal for the metal Apple Watch. Personally, I don’t think the price reduction would be worth a switch from metal to plastic, even if I cut the price of the Apple Watch SE from $249 to $199.

When Apple returned to 2013 when the iPhone 5C was introduced, many people didn’t like the idea of using plastic iPhones when they were already used to using glass and metal iPhones. Apple has never made another iPhone out of plastic.

There’s a debate about “Apple Watch for Kids,” but the Apple Watch SE is not all there is to it. I know many people who buy Apple Watch SE. Because it looks like any other Apple Watch, and has all the important WatchOS features, but is much lower in price. Again, I don’t think it’s a worthwhile trade-off.

Fortunately, Bloomberg’s Mark Garman reported this week that Apple may have given up on changing the materials. According to his source, Apple’s design team “doesn’t like the look” of plastic watches, and the operations team concluded that using plastic doesn’t significantly reduce costs.
