The iPad is a much bigger hit than you thought, new data reveals
Everyone knows that the iPhone is Apple’s most popular product. However, according to newly published research, what you may not have known is how well the iPad has stacked up on Apple’s top sellers, and it has simultaneously lost the popularity of Macs.
iPad users are almost as common as iPhone users, more than twice as many Macs
CIRP recently conducted a survey of Apple customers to understand how the company’s three tent pole products (iPhone, iPad and Mac) play.
One focus was understanding the power of Apple’s ecosystem, determined by customers who own multiple products.
Michael Levin and Josh Lotz wrote CIRP:
The iPhone remains the most dominant product, with 94% of Apple’s customers now owning one… The iPad is the next, and is owned by 78%. Mac computers have become much less penetrated in 36% of recent customers…
74% of customers, virtually all iPad owners, own an iPad and an iPhone. Only 30% own all three, as limited by the relative shortage of Apple customers’ Macs.
While many people may draw their own conclusions on the data, the most interesting element to me is the popularity of the iPad.
Its success is undoubtedly related to being the most affordable of the three Apple products. The revenue gap is clear.
Nevertheless, 78% of Apple customers own one on their iPhone compared to 94%, a staggering number.
It’s more than twice the number of Mac users, and is Apple’s clear success story.
I would like to know how many of these iPads are actively used as they appear to be ignored in everyday use. Again, the iPad is Apple’s most versatile device, so it can be used effectively in a variety of ways.
Perhaps iPad usage patterns will be subject to future CIRP investigations.
