Turn your iPad into a game display with this one simple trick (video)
As your resident iPad advocate, I will continue to say that the iPad is the most versatile computer on the market. It can also be a laptop, tablet, e-book, note-taking machine, or portable display. This post will focus on that final work. The iPad has always had a great display for all of the media consumption, especially with the M4 iPad Pro. But what if you say you can use the same iPad with a dummy display to play an Xbox, PlayStation, or Mac Mini? This is your way.
To see how this is done, be sure to check out the video below.
iPad as a dummy display
Most people know of HDMI dongle from USB-C that allows you to push video from your iPad to an external display. It’s simple and easy. But what if you want to push a video from another video source? Those same dongles don’t know how to do it, nor do they know the iPad. But this one simple (free) app, Orion, tricks your iPad into filming videos.
This is what you need:
- USB-C iPad running iPads from 17 or later
- HDMI to USB-C capture card
- Note that these capture cards look the same as USB-C dongle from HDMI. So if you step into a retailer, it’s Capture Card. I went to a large retailer and was recommended by an employee to regularly dongle to realize it wasn’t a capture card.
- The capture card reverses the HDMI input, allowing this to happen all.
- As a casual gamer, I have been using Guermok video capture cards for three years and are under $20. If you want better latency and frame rates, get the Elgato 4K.
- Orion App – All of these work and are free!

How to set up
Once you have the gear, it’s easy to do:
- Connect the console’s HDMI cable to the capture card
- Plug the capture card into the USB-C port on your iPad
- Open the Orion app
- Console power supply
- Boom – Playing games on your iPad screen!
The Orion app acts as a “TV.” You will automatically see feeds from the console, including audio routed through your iPad’s speakers. Also, if you’re using Pro models, the Quad-Speaker system makes it sound incredible. You can also connect Bluetooth headphones and route audio in that way.

Final Take
Turning your iPad into a portable gaming monitor for just $20 is one of the best hacks you can do. But again, anything with the video on it works. Therefore, it can be used as a portable Mac Mini or Steam Deck monitor. It’s a very simple and useful trick. Whether you’re traveling, whether you’re filmed on TV or just want to play in bed, this setup is provided. It’s simple, affordable, and another reason why the iPad keeps Apple making it on the most versatile computers.
