Wireless reverse charging has been a long-term effort by Apple, Partially However, it was implemented in 2020. However, despite the widespread adoption on Android smartphones, it has not been fully activated on any iPhone model.

Our own sources show that Apple is working on a more advanced version, and a new report states that the feature is currently being tested on a prototype for the iPhone 17 Pro.

Wireless reverse charging

Wireless reverse charging is when the smartphone’s wireless charging coil works in both directions and the phone can charge the secondary device. In principle, one iPhone can be allowed to charge another, but a more practical application is to charge low power devices such as AirPods and Apple Watch.

This feature is relatively common on Android phones. It is offered by over 12 models from both Samsung and Xiaomi, as well as many Google Pixel models. Other brands that offer it on at least one mobile phone include OnePlus, Nothing and Sony.

It should be noted that the supported charging speed is slow. So, if the accessories are not driving low power and are not near the charger, such as when traveling, this is an emergency function.

iPhone 12 has a partial implementation

The mystery behind why Apple has been taking it so long goes deep when I remember that the components needed for wireless reverse charging were actually found in the disassembly of the iPhone 12.

The circuit was found to be partially active as the phone can charge the Magsafe battery pack, but for unknown reasons Apple did not enable full Magsafe/QI support.

Apple is working on a more advanced version

Our own sources show that Apple is working on more advanced versions of features in 2023, and initially wanted to prepare this for the iPhone 14.

Apple has greater ambitions for reverse wireless charging than we’ve seen, according to sources familiar with the issues we’ve talked about so far. evertrendzone (…)

One important aspect of bilateral charging is managing the charging speed between your iPhone and other devices. These include heat dissipation and charging efficiency.

Apple is developing a special user interface for reverse wireless charging, similar to what is currently used in Magsafe chargers and accessories. This includes on-screen animations that help teach users how to use the feature, and sound effects that indicate that bilateral wireless charging has begun.

Testing iPhone 17 Pro

After two models, I don’t have one yet, but Leaker Instant Digital says it is being tested on the iPhone 17 Pro today.

Apple has tested the 7.5W reverse charging feature on the iPhone 17 Pro. I don’t know if it will be opened for use this time.

They were right in last year’s previous leaks about the yellow iPhone 14 on the iPad Air and the landscape’s front camera.
