With the announcement of the iPados 26, Apple ultimately did what appeared to be resisting for over a decade. I changed my iPad to a computer.

Apple has been sending mixed messages about devices for a long time, and sometimes claiming to be computers, while the iPad and Mac are two very different devices with two very different roles.

The iPad was not a computer

On the other hand, it was run by Apple in 2017. What is a computer? The AD campaign claims that the iPad is essentially a computer. At the very least, the computer can do anything. The company held the catchphrase for its advertising campaign for several years.

On the other hand, Apple has it Also Long claimed that there are two iPads and Macs very Something else. In response to Microsoft’s surface, Tim Cook suggested that a PC and tablet would be something like “convergence of the toaster and fridge.”

Technically, of course, it’s available on the iPad. everytime It was a computer. But so are other devices in the company – pocket computers, wrist computers, face computers. What we really mean in this term is a device that can be used as a complete PC or Mac alternative, and in the past my iPad Advocate colleagues couldn’t convince me that it was something like that.

In fact, I effectively replaced the iPad Pro, which was collecting dust in my drawers on my MacBook Air.

But I think it is now

To be clear, “not a computer” was never a criticism. When my friend asked me what advice they wanted to buy, I listened a lot to what they wanted to do with it and recommended an iPad with a keyboard. In some use cases it’s actually an iPad Better More than a Mac. Still, I have recommended the MacBook Air method more frequently than the iPad.

But for me, the iPados 26 changes everything. With the features the device currently has, we don’t know how anyone can convincingly assert that it’s not a computer.

it’s not right A computer for everyone, of course. We are particular about MacBooks. However, Apple has removed many of the reasons why they hesitate to recommend a device to someone who is used on a Mac or PC.

Appropriate window

The biggest change Much more It’s the right window. The iPad started out as a single-task device. One fullscreen app at a time. Slideover and splitview then allowed us to use multiple apps at once, but that was rather clunky and unintuitive. Stage Manager has made usability even better, but for me, the window flexibility alternative I get on a Mac was still not enough.

But now the iPad works much the same as the Mac in this respect. You can open multiple apps and place, size and overlay each window as you like. It appears that there is a limit of 12 apps on the screen at a time, but it’s rare to actually have Mac Windows open.

Better drag and drop and file support

Another big win is Mac-style drag-and-drop support. The moving of content between apps and Windows was frankly scary on the iPad. There’s no more.

Similarly, file handling was pretty poor on the iPad, but there were some valuable improvements here. You can now drag the folder into the dock. Label folder with symbols for faster identification. Sets a customizable list view. You can assign apps that open different file types.

Finally, the iPad gets a Menobar! From a usability perspective, I don’t think anyone has come up with a better UI to access features that don’t appear immediately on the surface. Menu not only makes use of buried features faster, but also makes them more discoverable. That was one of my biggest criticisms of the power app on the iPad: It’s not just hard to grasp how It’s difficult to do or judge specific things Is it? You can do them. The Menobah almost solves that.

As I say, there is still a reason to choose a Mac over an iPad. But with these dramatic Mac-like UI improvements, I think the iPad will be a suitable choice for more people.

that’s right especially All of these new features are a case given that they are supported by the cheapest iPad in Apple’s lineup! Just as my colleague Fernando is demoing on a new video, you’ll get an A16 iPad, Logitech keyboard, trackpad and even third-party pencils for under $450. That’s now Really A sweet budget setup for half the price of a MacBook.
