With the M4 MAC lineup, Apple does not take more than 10 years

At first glance, forever, for the first time, Apple will update all Macs using the M4 chip and assume the rumors are correct. This has been several times approaching, but it has not happened anytime in the last decade at least.

Earlier this fall, Apple introduced the first Mac with the M4: MacBook Pro, IMAC and Mac Mini. There were many notable upgrades, including Thunderbolt Ports, Nano-Texture display options, and center stage camera upgrades.

These refreshes covered most of the Mac lineup, leaving only the MacBook Air, Mac Studio and Mac Pro. According to Mark Garman of Bloomberg, the MacBook Air will receive the M4 in the spring, but Mac Studio and Mac Pro will receive it by mid-2025. So, assuming that continues, all Macs in the lineup are up to date.

Historic MAC Refresh

Not every Mac in the lineup remains up to date. We were pretty close to the M1. Almost every MAC received it in about 18 months, except for the MAC Pro. In fact, Mac Pro is very rarely refreshed and you should use it as a key indicator.

My last Mac Pro Refresh was in 2023 and I received my M2 Ultra. Most Macs received a family of M2 chips chips finished in WWDC23 with MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro, followed up with WWDC22, Mac Mini and MacBook Pro. However, there was no iMac refresh on the M2, creating an incomplete cycle.

Going back, 2019 – the first time I saw the current Mac Pro Design. It’s also another year when Apple has refreshed most Macs, with IMAC (both sizes) kicking off early in the year, with MacBook Air and MacBook Pro halfway through, and the all-new 16-inch MacBook Pro and then Mac Pro heading towards the end of the year.

However, there was no IMAC Pro or Mac Mini Refresh and again in 2019 it was an incomplete cycle. Even if you counted the Mac Mini that year, it was late in 2018, so it would be disabled because the iMac Pro Refresh was missing.

I can continue to go into the details, but I keep it easy. When Apple introduced the Trashcan Mac Pro and updated the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, IMAC, and Mac Mini within a year, it was in 2013 that all Macs were updated with a 12-month rolling period.

summary

So, assuming the rumors continue, the M4 will be the first time in over a decade that Apple has refreshed all Macs. The MacBook Air seems like a rock. The same goes for Mac Studio and Mac Pro. I hope Apple doesn’t change plans. We must be golden.
